Why use interactive video conferences with elementary students?
Communication is a key learning skill.
Students gain opportunities for higher level thinking with interactive projects.
Live face to face interaction with peers from around the world expand the students' horizons.
You can expand what you have the expertise to offer by bring experts to your classroom.
You can join other schools in project based learning events.
How to create a collaboration
Begin at the end - Backward Design
What do you want to teach?
What are the standards and the curriculum?
Picture the Result
How will you know the students learned what you wanted?
What will success look like?
Plan the collaboration - use resources to find, post the idea
Be Flexible
Crafting a program pitch: (from MAGPI)
To entice others to participate in your collaboration, be sure to include the following in your call for participation:
Who:Who are you?
What:What are you trying to accomplish? What is your target audience? What are you asking for?
When:When would you like this project to take place (proposed date/time or range of dates/times)?
Resources:What resources are you looking for your collaborative partner to contribute? What would they need in order to participate? (If they need H.323 videoconferencing capabilities and Internet2 connectivity, say it!)
The selling point:Why should this potential partner collaborate with you? What’s in it for them?
Details:Details are critical! With your collaboration team, make sure you plan for the following:
Content Plan:This is, in fact, similar to a lesson plan. Create a flexible (and permeable!) agenda for each interaction. Start with the intended outcomes to make sure everything you plan is grounded in learning.
Participant Responsibilities:Create a document that explicitly outlines each person’s responsibilities - - from creating handouts, to testing connections, to monitoring agendas, etc.
Communication Plan:How are you going to communicate with your collaborators or those participating in your project. Email? Telephone? Wiki? Program page on MUSE?
Technical Plan:What technologies are you using? When will you test them? How are you connecting for the interaction? Create a plan that details all of this.
Evaluation Plan:What evidences understanding? How do you know if your project was successful? Think about this before your project ends and integrate it into the overall plan.
